My Reflection Letter (Spring 2013):
Throughout this class I have noticed more of a change in my understanding of English and literacy, than anything else. In prior English classes I have learned more on the basic facts of English, such as grammar and spelling, but in this course I have learned much more of the understanding of what English and literacy are. For example, one of the first things we discussed was about text; this was the point where my understanding of things increased. When I was asked what I believe a text is, I replied that it was anything with physical words, and from right there I begin to see how wrong I was about my understanding of English as a subject. I learned that a text can be pretty much anything that can be described. A text can be anything from a book, to a picture or even a wall. From that point on throughout the class I began to see the things that I believed to be true in English weren’t quite what I thought. In our papers and class discussions I learned what literacy was and what it wasn’t. From this course my knowledge of literacy in the world grew and opened my mind to different possibilities that literacy can be. I can truly say looking back that this course taught me more about English than any other class I have ever taken. Now that’s not to say that I am now an expert on the English subject or even literacy for that matter, but I have definitely been opened up to new things when it comes to English. I have a lot I have to work on and many more questions to ask about English in my future years in the education system, but I truly believe that I progressed in understanding enormously, from the point of the start of class.
I believe that most of my educating came from our papers. As can be seen on this site, when one is to look at my rough drafts and then look at the finished copy, it can be shown that quite an improvement had been made and this is entirely due to the great help of the professor. For she pointed out the mistakes and not only that went above that and pointed out different ways that can be taken in the flow of the paper and different points that can be made in the paper. That was the largest help in my understanding of this course and the subjects being taught. I have never been a great reader or writer nor have I ever been great at understanding the world of English, but this course gave me a large push in the right direction. I feel like now I can more understand the things I will be learning in my future English courses and possibly even be able to do even better in them because of the class I have taken.
